Description

Although Unix file tools are a standard part of any GNU/Linux system, most typical tools are gathered to this groups for purposes of CPU accounting.

  • basename (1) - strip directory and suffix from filenames
  • chgrp (1) - change group ownership
  • chmod (1) - change file access permissions
  • chown (1) - change file owner and group
  • ci (1) - check in RCS revisions
  • co (1) - check out RCS revisions
  • cp (1) - copy files and directories
  • cvs (1) - Concurrent Versions System
  • df (1) - report filesystem disk space usage
  • dirname (1) - strip non-directory suffix from file name
  • du (1) - estimate file space usage
  • file (1) - determine file type
  • find (1) - search for files in a directory hierarchy
  • groups (1) - print the groups a user is in
  • gtar
  • gunzip
  • gzip (1) - compress or expand files
  • lessecho - expand metacharacters, such as * and ?, in filenames on Unix systems. man
  • ln (1) - make links between files
  • locate
  • make (1) - GNU make utility to maintain groups of programs

  • whereis (1) - locate the binary, source, and manual page files for a command
  • which (1) - shows the full path of (shell) commands
