The Child Language Data Exchange System

Description

The CHILDES database contains transcript and media data collected from conversations with young children.

Additionally, the CHILDES system provides tools for studying conversational interactions. These tools include a database of transcripts, programs for computer analysis of transcripts, methods for linguistic coding,and systems for linking transcripts to digitized audio and video.

People who use these data are asked to abide by these rules.

  1. You must become a member of the CHILDES system by contacting Brian MacWhinney at brian "commecial-at-character" andrew.cmu.edu and giving your address, email address, phone number, and some information about the use you are making of the data.
  2. You should acquire a copy of the CHILDES manual either from Brian MacWhinney or from Lawrence Erlbaum (published in 1991).
  3. Cite MacWhinney and Snow (1985, 1990) in articles based on the use of the database. Also cite particular articles for particular corpora.
  4. Assist the growth of the database by contributing new corpora and urging your colleagues to contribute new corpora.

In newer versions of the CHILDES system, the rules above have been replaced with the the http://talkbank.org/share/ for data sharing for all TalkBank databases, including the CHILDES database.
