FIN-CLARIN Annual Report for the Year 2009

There were two main tasks for the FIN-CLARIN during 2009: (1) Supporting the completion of the EU-wide Common Language Resource and Technology Infrastructure (CLARIN) preparatory phase project and (2) preparing and initial building of the Finnish national language resource infrastructure.

In 2009, FIN-CLARIN received 300,000 euro from the Ministry of Education Finland as procect funding specifically assigned to these tasks to be carried out at the University of Helsinki.

Building an Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) tool was started and nearly completed during 2009 at the CSC as subcontracted work.

A federation agreement was authored and negotiated among the authentication authorities HAKA (in Finland,, SurfFederatie (Netherlands, and DFN (Germany, This agreement forms the legal basis on which the users in these three countries can use their own usercodes and passwords when accessing CLARIN resources and services. The framework was implemented also in practice by the CLARIN centres in those three countries.

Started the construction of Finnish WordNet (FinnWordNet) by translating the English WordNet into Finnish. The work was done by commercial translators and resulted in a raw Finnish WordNet which is directly linked into. Some 50,000 euro was spent in the subcontracts, and the translation was completed in about 6 months in March 2010 when we had the initial version.

The Building of the Finnish Treebank was initiated in cooperation with the Research Institute for Languages in Finland (Kotus) by subcontracting the extraction of all example sentences of the recent comprehensive grammar (Iso suomen kielioppi). The process process of converting these into a kind of grammar definition corpus was started.

The FIN-CLARIN made an inventory of relevant sites in Finland which possess language resources which could be included in the CLARIN framework. This inventory indicates all departments or research groups, a contact person, a brief title or description of the material and a link where to find further information. See
